Ingredients

  • 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 2 ½ cups plain flour (White Lily recommended)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 ounces red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy (5–7 minutes).
  2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.
  3. Mix vinegar and cocoa into a paste; add to the batter.
  4. Sift flour, soda, and salt; add alternately with buttermilk.
  5. Stir in food coloring and vanilla; mix gently.
  6. Pour into 3 greased 8-inch pans and bake at 350°F for about 28 minutes.
